Capturing the Hip Hop Lifestyle at OFF THE HOOK JAM with iPhone 7 Videography and Creative Editing11/10/2023 B-boys, B-girls, graffiti artists , Skateboarders and hip hop fans alike came together
On Saturday, November 4, 2023, the Liberty State Park Railroad Station in Jersey City, New Jersey, was transformed into a vibrant hub of hip hop & skateboarding culture for the OFF THE HOOK JAM event. Presented by @mr_mustart and @LEVITATE_CREATIVE_SERVICES, the event featured live graffiti art, breaking battles, a skateboarding competition with live music and performances throughout the evening. My experience was captured by me with my iPhone 7. However with all due respect I did not capture any footage of the skateboarding because I was influenced by the dance circles and graffiti art. Bboy Bgirl Lifestyle Newest Participant who entered their first ever breaking competition / battle. I was drawn to the OFF THE HOOK JAM not only of its focus on showcasing the diverse and vibrant hip hop lifestyle more over because our dance group, NBK Natural Born Killahz of Jersey City was being awarded with the Crew Legacy Award from CUDA Culture, a 501c3 non profit organization based in Jersey City, NJ. From the Boys and Bgirls spinning and flipping on the floor to the graffiti artists creating masterpieces on the walls, there was something for everyone to enjoy. I was also impressed by the positive energy and sense of community that permeated the event. To capture the essence of the OFF THE HOOK JAM, I used my iPhone 7's videography capabilities to create a brief 60-second video that highlights some of the event's highlights. I focused on capturing the energy and excitement of the breakdancing battles, the creativity of the graffiti artists, and the overall vibe of the event. In post-production, I used creative editing techniques to enhance the video and tell a story about the OFF THE HOOK JAM. I used slow motion and close-ups to highlight the dancers' skills, and I used color grading and transitions to create a visually appealing and engaging video. Here are some of the specific techniques that I used to capture the hip hop lifestyle at OFF THE HOOK JAM with my iPhone 7 videography and creative editing: * **Use of slow motion:** Slow motion is a great way to highlight the athleticism and skill of the dancers. I used slow motion to capture some footwork from the our BBGL new student's' battle, as well as to display some of the action of some of the Graff writers.

Windmills are one of the most iconic bboying, bgirling, breaking moves, and for good reason. They're flashy, they're challenging, and they look amazing when done well. But like any other bgirling, bboying, breaking move, windmills take practice to master.
That's where the saying "repetition is the father of learning" comes in. The more you practice windmills, the better you'll become at them. It's just that simple. In this video, I share a little bit of my windmill practice with you. I'm not perfect, but I just keep pushing forward to continue developing good windmills. And the only way I'm getting there is by practicing. |
So if you're serious about learning windmills, here's my advice: practice, practice, practice. And don't get discouraged if you don't get it right away. Just keep practicing, condition your body and eventually you'll nail it.
Here are a few tips to help you get started:
* Start by learning the basic windmill position. The stab freeze with legs open. This is the position you'll be in when you're spinning around.
* Once you have the basic position down, start practicing the windmill motion. This is the part where you're spinning around on your back.
* Don't worry about going fast at first. Just focus on getting the motion down. Learn the technique of kicking you legs and twisting your waist as your roll onto your back.
* Once you're comfortable with the windmill motion, start practicing doing windmills for longer periods of time.
* Most importantly, have fun!
Bboying, bgirling, breaking also known as breakdancing is challenging but a rewarding art form and windmills are one of the most satisfying moves to learn. So keep practicing, and eventually you'll be windmillin' like a pro.

Many people use a perception to fuel their understanding of something vs directly questioning the source and seeing the many intricacies of how things may be totally different than thought of. Being raised by my family has helped me understand the value of self preservation. Breaking or breakdancing has set self preservation first in my application of how to do movements to even be open and as outspoken as possible to my understanding of things around me and how they are perceived from my lens . KEY WORD. LISTEN MORE. With that said at times when there are communal gatherings its in my spirit to be at all of them however, living and knowing to be responsible, being able to provide food and shelter today and tomorrow and learning how to stretch your financial means, it does become challenging to be at and support all events. Making sure not to get sucked into my passions putting my priorities and responsibilities first. The picture always looks different from the outside perspective. Networking and social interactions are beneficial however when your responsible and accountable for where your going to lay your head at night, being grateful to be breathing and able to do what many may think are the simple things in life those things become the most valuable. So therefore as we learn there tends to be a time and place for everything its just captured amongst our capabilities. Using creativity to make things possible. Never USING anyone, using my experiences to share my truth.

It starts with a common unity. The music brings us together. Just as we were breaking the mold of indoor quarantining, I was invited to a family gathering in honor of our community. Walking into the area the vibe was set with music , drumming, and an altar in remembrance of Robert Ross (June 8, 1968[2] – April 17, 2021), known professionally as Black Rob, who was an American rapper, but first and foremost a person of his family, community & peers.

From the Late 80's to the Early 90's our dance went through a period of time in which almost no one cared to break.
Only a few select dancers holding on to a movement and dance, created from a moment in time, were to be found. The resurgence of this dance building momentum for about 26 years, comes to a halt due to another major impact "Covid-19" . The global pandemic put a halt to our gatherings, leaving the purest, and passion hearted bboy bgirl , breaking practitioner to share in dance via the internet circle. The global halt resulted in Bgirls and Bboys world wide sharing virtual communications to display their dance. Dancers sharing solo exhibitions, competing in contests, new virtual teaching programs, all through the World Wide Web.

As we the people work on resuming some sort of normalcy in bringing our people together in dance, we also find ourselves operating in some new capacities as our dance further develops as an accepted Olympic Sport.

My first in person community gathering after quarantine started off in Pennsylvania at an event called
"Rock City". 
Although there were some private invite only events , due to everyone's safety concerns being met, I chose to go out and support this public event.
"Rock city is a breaking event x competition founded by BBOY LIL ROCK with the intent to uplift our local community and share the breaking culture for our future generations. One of our main goals is to give shine to underground x new x old hidden talent (bboys x bgirls) also to give young bboys a reason to train harder and reach that next level by preparing for the event."
https://myudef.org Pulling up into the parking lot , music bumping , with my partner and also with my friend bboy practitioner / music producer, the vibe was just like it was before the pandemic. Positive emotions / thought vibrations good music and people. Life had it, that as I pulled in to the parking spot I see one of the DJ's of the night DJ FLEG. As I greeted the music selector, the harmonious feeling of seeing fellow community members grew. I knew this was going to be a good moment to reconnect to the music and our community. I walked into the venue respectfully greeting my peers and floor family to then see the Rocking Community , Uprockers, in their Apache line . "In contrast to the circle formation in breakdancing, the Apache line allows multiple opposing dancers or crews to face each other and execute their burns." Uprock - Wikipedia I was able to see my rocking family Mastermind Rockers, along with Dynasty Rockers & BVD's rocking groups. Once you see that going down, you know its time to get to business. However what happens on the line and in the Cypher is energy that is manifested and left in the moment of that CIRCLE .
